American Idol first debuted in 2002 and is by far one of the most popular television singing shows. Auditioning contestants, ranging from ages 16-28 come from all over the United States to try to make it to the American Idol Hollywood finals.
While American Idol auditions take place nationwide for each season, only a few hundred make it to Hollywood and then the judges start narrowing down from there. Here’s how it works. Once at twenty-four semi-finalists, the show starts an eleven week singing competition. At this point, each American Idol contestant performs one song based on a particular music theme. It could be Motown, Pop, Country, and so on. America has a two hour window to vote for an American Idol once the show ends. The next night the shows will announce who has been voted off. This structure continues until there are only three contestants remaining. The three remaining American Idol contestants will sing one song of their choice, and the other two songs are chosen for them. America votes again and the two finalists remain. The American Idol is announced at the end of the final show. AmericanIdol7.com
The American Idol winner receives a record deal and some non-winners have received record deals as well. Season 7 of American Idol begins on January 15, 2008 with a four hour premier. So auditioning is over and America is ready to find their next American Idol.
